Music is practically in Spiegel's DNA. He was born in Los Angeles into a musical family: his grandfather was a concert violinist and one of the founders of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra; his father was an amateur trumpeter; his brother is a pianist and composer; and his sister is a bluegrass violinist. Influenced by rock bands, Spiegel became passionate about playing the guitar as a teenager and began apprenticing with a local jazz guitarist near his home in Southern California. He fell in love with jazz only in his high school years in Germany, where his father – an employee of the US Army – brought his family. In between, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy before deciding to make a radical change in his life and go on a scholarship to study music at the famous Berklee Academy of Music in Boston. After graduation, Spiegel returned to Europe and performed with some of the top musicians there for more than a decade. After returning to the United States in 2001, Spiegel decided to settle in New York City, where he was part of the jazz scene at the time. There he conducted his large orchestra and also worked in smaller ensembles. Wanting to teach at the college, he attended the City College of New York, where he earned a master's degree, and then earned a doctorate in jazz composition at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music as a Henry Mancini Institute Scholar. He currently lives and works in Miami and teaches at Florida International University and Miami Dade College. He maintains strong ties with Europe and returns there every year to play in festivals and clubs across the continent.
"Spiegel's vibrant hard bop energy, which he combines with the progressive aesthetics of rock music, has carved out a niche for himself in the contemporary jazz scene." Ejazz News: "Spiegel's music, which is intellectual to the core, melodic and elegant, will both draw you in and challenge you."
